Psychosocial Rehabilitation

Individuals with serious mental illness need opportunities to identify and choose their desired roles in their community. Health System’s Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) program helps patients overcome obstacles and build a better life.

PSR is an ancillary service. If you receive services at any UNMH Behavioral Health Clinic, you can be referred by your provider.

Holistic Rehabilitation for a Healthier You 

Our support focuses on four main areas of recovery:

  • Development of basic living skills
  • Psychosocial skills training
  • Therapeutic socialization
  • Supported employment

Clients can join classes to gain personal empowerment and acquire crucial basic skills for mental health recovery. Classes are offered in 13-week cycles, four times a year. Clients can start at any time.

Hands-On Classes 

We offer classes that help clients develop hands-on skills and make social connections.

  • Ceramics
  • Gardening
  • Photography
  • Basic computer skills 
  • Cooking
  • Mindful living
  • Daily fitness

Educational classes at PSR address topics such as:

  • Building self-esteem 
  • Problem solving 
  • Healthy boundary setting 
  • Stress reduction 
  • Wellness, recovery and resiliency

 

Rehabilitation Program Information

Who can attend?
Anyone with a referral from a member of the University Psychiatric Center care team, such as doctors, counselors, caseworkers, or nurses. The referring provider must accept responsibility as the primary behavioral health care provider. 

How much does it cost? 
PSR services can be covered by Medicaid and the New Mexico Department of Health.

How long is the program? 
Length of time is determined by the client’s personal goals.  
Some people meet their goals in several cycles, while others may finish in one cycle.
